Coinbase and Bitcoin Face Two Catalysts in 48 Hours

September 14, 2026

A Senate crypto vote Tuesday and a Fed rate call Wednesday demand strategies that survive the first event to profit from the second.

Crypto traders rarely get two binary events stacked this tightly. The CLARITY Act cloture vote lands Tuesday, September 15, followed less than 24 hours later by the Federal Reserve rate decision on Wednesday, September 16. That sequence matters for how you structure risk right now.

The Department of War Is on a Gold Mine’s Filings

On May 21, 2026, the board of a federal bank voted unanimously to lend nearly $3 billion to build a gold mine on American soil. Congress got 25 days notice. Nobody objected.

Final papers are expected in the second half of this year. The day that ink dries, three things happen at once:

funding risk goes to zero, the U.S. government becomes financially fused to the project, and Wall Street re-rates the stock from speculative developer to federally backed strategic asset.

One more detail. The company’s own filings cite “substantial support and partnership from the Department of War,” a phrase we’ve never seen on a gold project. The reason: alongside its gold, the deposit holds a metal China formally banned from export to the United States. The only domestic reserve in the country.

The company is about one fiftieth the size of Newmont.

Why This Trade Stands Out

Bitcoin is trading around $77,290 this morning, pinned below the $80,000 level that defined its early-September range. The market is not ignoring the legislative calendar; it is paralyzed by it. Positioning light and premium elevated across near-dated options is the tell. Two significant catalysts arriving back-to-back create asymmetric conditions for traders with defined risk and a clear thesis on which event actually moves the needle.

The Story Behind the Trade

Senate Republicans released a revised CLARITY Act text days ahead of the September 15 cloture vote, but betting markets have grown less confident the bill advances this year. The updated text includes a new ethics provision that Republicans say has President Donald Trump’s sign-off, but the vote still hinges on whether enough Democrats will support moving the bill forward. Senator Lummis calls it bipartisan. Democrats are not calling it passable.

Republicans hold 53 Senate seats, meaning at least seven Democrats must back the cloture motion. On Polymarket, odds the CLARITY Act becomes law in 2026 are around 18%. A failed cloture vote hurts COIN and HOOD in the short run. But it does not change what happens Wednesday.

Futures pricing tracked by CME FedWatch implies roughly an 86% chance of a 25-basis-point hike heading into the September 16 announcement. PCE inflation is running at 3.7% year over year, well above the Fed’s 2% target, and three policymakers dissented for a hike at the July meeting. Bitcoin’s reaction will likely depend more on whether the decision surprises markets than on the hike itself. With a hike now the consensus, a hold would be the surprise, and a surprise to the upside for risk assets.

Technical and Fundamental Alignment

Coinbase most recently traded in a roughly $173-$182 range, settling near $175, about 56% off its 52-week high of $402. Robinhood traded between about $111 and $116 that same session, settling near $112. Both stocks have already absorbed a year of legislative disappointment and macro pressure. The downside from here is arguably better-known than the upside. When CLARITY Act optimism briefly surged in late August and early September, both names saw sharp, fast moves. A cloture win tomorrow would reset both immediately. A hold from the Fed on Wednesday would do the rest.

Options Perspective

HOOD’s call-to-put ratio currently runs nearly 3:1, signaling that options traders are already leaning toward the upside. COIN shows a similar call-heavy structure. Near-dated implied volatility is elevated ahead of both events, which makes buying straddles expensive and outright long calls a premium-heavy bet. The better fit is a bull call spread on COIN expiring after the Fed decision, targeting the $185-$200 range. The spread caps the premium at risk, lets time decay work against the long leg more slowly than a naked call, and keeps the position alive through the legislative noise on Tuesday to collect on Wednesday’s reaction.

Trump Signed 4 Executive Orders in ONE DAY to Bring This American Energy Source Back

And he didn’t stop there.

Trump ordered the U.S. to begin rebuilding the domestic supply chain behind it – after decades of growing dependence on foreign countries.

There’s just one problem: America currently produces only a fraction of the critical material it consumes. But one tiny U.S. company controls more than 30 million pounds of it. The government has already bought from this company before. And today, its shares trade for around $1.50. Now Trump’s historic energy push could put this overlooked company squarely in the spotlight.

If the cloture vote fails and COIN sells off Tuesday, the spread simply enters Wednesday cheaper to exit or hold. The defined-risk structure is what allows you to survive Event 1 without abandoning the thesis on Event 2.

Risk Management

Three things would weaken the thesis. First, a cloture failure followed by explicit Senate leadership confirmation that the bill is dead for 2026 removes a significant re-rating catalyst entirely. Second, a Fed hike paired with a hawkish dot plot projecting further increases would tighten financial conditions faster than the market prices today, pressuring all risk assets including crypto equities. Third, even Senate passage would not finish the job, since the House canceled planned votes in the final two weeks of September and any reconciliation could slip into a lame-duck session after the November elections. Position size accordingly: this is a catalyst trade, not a fundamental rerating.

The Beast Verdict

COIN near $175 with two binary catalysts arriving in 48 hours and call-side options flow already leaning bullish is exactly the kind of compressed-risk, catalyst-driven moment this publication was built to find. The CLARITY Act vote is the test. The Fed decision is the payoff. A bull call spread with defined premium at risk gives you both shots without doubling down on either one going wrong. Watch the 2:15 p.m. ET cloture vote Tuesday and the Fed statement at 2:00 p.m. ET Wednesday: those two results will set the tone for crypto equities through the end of September.
