Block Reports Tonight With Bitcoin Down From Quarter-End

Bitcoin closed Q3 at about $83,554. It trades in the mid-$76,000s this morning. That gap is the entire options thesis on Block tonight.

Block is expected to post close to a 90% year-over-year jump in EPS when it reports third-quarter results on November 3, after market close. Wall Street analysts project quarterly earnings of $1.02 per share, on revenues forecast at $6.63 billion. Those are strong numbers. The market already knows them. What the market is discounting is that Block’s crypto line looks measurably worse today than it did on September 30.

The Bitcoin Complication

Bitcoin rose about 6% in September 2026 to roughly $83,554 as of September 30. Block’s remeasurement of its bitcoin investment was calculated against that close. For Q3, Block’s preliminary Cash App Bitcoin Ecosystem Revenue was $1.8 billion, and the company expected a $229.7 million remeasurement gain on its bitcoin investment based on the September 30 closing price. Since then, bitcoin has dropped into the mid-$76,000s.

The selloff was not organic. Last Thursday’s Binance exploit, now the largest crypto hack in dollar terms at roughly $6.3 billion, knocked bitcoin into the mid-$76,000s. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs also saw heavy outflows after the hack.

That is the setup. A bitcoin price decline driven by a specific, identifiable external shock, not by any deterioration in Block’s business. The Q3 quarter itself was earned into a rising crypto market.

The Operating Business Is the Real Story

Analysts say layoffs and restructuring have supported margin expansion, and believe earnings can grow faster than revenue as management reorganizes around AI. Square total revenue is expected to reach $2.56 billion for the quarter, up 14.3% from a year ago. Cash App total revenue is projected at $4.03 billion, up 6% year on year. These are the durable engines. Bitcoin revenue, expected at $1.73 billion and already forecast to decline 12.2%, is well-understood and already in consensus.

Block is not the only crypto-adjacent equity where the operating business and the bitcoin price are telling different stories. Coinbase faced the same split heading into its own earnings — a stock priced on regulatory fear while the core exchange business held up.

XYZ stock reached an intraday high of $86.92 on August 27 but has since pulled back by a little over 11%. The stock has given back real ground on fears that are partly crypto-driven and partly Morgan Stanley’s recent downgrade to Equal Weight. Both factors are now embedded in the price.

Options Perspective

Block shares could move 9% when the company reports earnings tonight, based on options data compiled by Bloomberg. That is the options market’s implied move. History suggests it is a reasonable floor for the actual swing: the stock has exceeded the implied move in four of the past eight earnings announcements, including an 18.8% jump on February 26 against a 10.2% implied move.

With IV rank at a modest 25%, near-dated calls are not expensive relative to Block’s historical volatility. A defined-risk bull call spread targeting a move toward $83 to $85, using the November 7 expiration to capture the post-earnings price reset while limiting premium at risk, fits the thesis cleanly. The debit is bounded. The potential reward on a strong beat with any relief in bitcoin is considerably larger.

What Would Break the Thesis

Credit losses in Cash App lending are the primary fundamental risk. Morgan Stanley’s downgrade cited longer loan durations as a driver of potential credit losses. A guidance cut tied to consumer credit would hurt regardless of what bitcoin does. Additionally, if bitcoin breaks below $75,000 before the call, sentiment could overwhelm the fundamentals.

The Beast Verdict

Block reports a quarter earned into an ~$83,554 bitcoin market. Investors are pricing it against a mid-$76,000 one. The gap was created by a Binance hack, not by anything inside Block’s operations. Block marks its BTC holdings to market each quarter, so price swings flow into net income, and a higher BTC price on September 30 than on June 30 shows up as a gain that the Street already modeled higher. The core business, Cash App and Square, is growing double digits below the bitcoin line. The implied move is a manageable 9%, IV rank is low, and the stock is 11% off its late-August highs. Defined-risk upside through a bull call spread expiring November 7 offers a disciplined way to express a high-conviction view: the bitcoin selloff has priced in a worse report than the quarter actually delivered.
