Snap Reports Wednesday. The Ad Market Just Sent a Warning Shot.

Three days ago, the digital-ad complex cracked. Alphabet posted its first top-and-bottom-line miss since the fourth quarter of 2022, with EPS of $2.12 per share against a roughly $3.00 to $3.02 expectation, and revenue of about $127.6 billion against roughly $127.9 billion to $128.2 billion in consensus forecasts. Search growth has been slowing this year, from 19% in the first quarter to 17% in the second and now 12%. The reason matters: Alphabet’s chief business officer said increased adoption of AI Mode contributed to the deceleration, because those conversational queries currently generate less advertising revenue per use than traditional search.

61% of Americans Worry America Could be on the Verge of Another Civil War

Today, more than half of America thinks a civil war is likely.

Former CIA Advisor Jim Rickards agrees.

He just uncovered a fascinating plot by Trump to keep the Democrats out of the White House until 2033.

And while he believes it could be successful, it could also trigger America’s Second Civil War.

Then came Reddit. The stock plunged about 29% on Friday, October 30, after the company said its U.S. audience is shrinking due to Google’s AI search features. Third-quarter revenue jumped 53% to $895 million, but U.S. daily users fell to 50.7 million, down 2.5 million from the prior quarter, and CEO Steve Huffman said search referrals dropped by more than 1 million a week in October. SNAP fell nearly 6% that same day in sympathy, closing at $5.34.

Snap reports Wednesday after the close. Analysts expect earnings of roughly $0.005 per share on revenue of $1.73 billion for Q3. That near-breakeven EPS print is not the trade. It never is with Snap. Ad revenue guidance, daily active users, and average revenue per user are the key drivers that move this stock, and with the sector freshly rattled, the Q4 advertising guide arriving Wednesday night carries more weight than usual.

Last quarter, Snap reported -$0.10 EPS, topping the -$0.12 consensus by $0.02, with revenue of $1.60 billion against estimates of $1.54 billion, up 18.9% year over year. The beat mattered less than the guide. That pattern will repeat. If Snap signals that the same Google AI headwinds dragging Reddit’s logged-out traffic are pinching its ad partners heading into Q4, the reaction will be swift. Snap does not have Reddit’s search-dependency problem, but it sells into the same brand and performance budgets that Alphabet’s miss just called into question.

What the Options Market Is Saying

SNAP’s 30-day implied volatility sits around 88% to 89% with an IV rank around 83, elevated heading into the event. The November 6 expiration carries an at-the-money implied volatility of about 130%, and options imply a move of roughly plus or minus 18% through that expiration. Snap is known for large earnings moves, typically 15-25%, and has moved 30% or more on particularly surprising results. The options market is pricing that history accurately.

With IV this elevated, buying a simple long call or long put is expensive: you are paying for realized movement that must exceed the implied move to profit. A defined-risk structure that limits premium at risk makes more sense. A bull call spread using the November 7 expiration, buying the $6 call and selling the $7.50 call, keeps total premium at risk capped while still capturing meaningful upside if the Q4 guide impresses. Conversely, traders who see a Reddit-style disappointment as the more likely outcome can structure a bear put spread, buying the $5.50 put and selling the $4.50 put. Both approaches define maximum loss at entry.

The same brand and performance budgets at risk for Snap have already inflicted severe damage elsewhere in ad tech. The Trade Desk’s collapse from its peak shows how quickly advertiser budget pressure can reprice an entire platform when guidance disappoints.

The Real Question

The loss-per-share figure Wednesday will not move markets. Snap has beaten the EPS consensus in each of its last four quarters and the bar remains deliberately low. What will move markets is whether management, on the 5 p.m. ET call, signals that advertiser budgets for the holiday quarter are holding, expanding, or pulling back.

Google’s AI-powered search is reducing referral traffic across platforms, and Reddit warned that total daily active unique visitors could decline by a low double-digit percentage in Q4 if the referral trend persists. Snap’s business is different, but it is not immune. In Q2, ad growth lagged total revenue growth as subscriptions did more of the lifting. If ad revenue guidance for Q4 disappoints, that mix-shift story stops being comforting.

Beast Verdict

Snap reports Wednesday into the weakest ad-sector sentiment in several quarters. The EPS print is noise. The Q4 revenue guide, advertiser tone, and any commentary on how AI search changes are affecting discovery on Snapchat are the signals that matter. Options pricing a plus-or-minus 18% move at an IV rank of 83 reflects that clearly.

Elevated implied volatility in SNAP reflects a broader reset in how markets are pricing guidance risk this cycle. A record earnings beat rate has raised the bar so high that even solid results can trigger sharp selloffs when forward guidance disappoints.

The edge here is in the asymmetry of the guide, not the quarter. Position with a defined-risk spread to express a directional view, size for a potential 18-25% move in either direction, and watch the advertiser commentary on the call as closely as any number management reports.
