Bonus Content: U.S. Refiners Have the Most to Lose If Trump’s Ceasefire Holds
Below is an important message from one of our highly valued sponsors. Please read it carefully as they have some special information to share with you.
Dear Reader,
Jeff Bezos is terrified.
He will be down on his knees, hands out, begging Elon for mercy.
Because Elon is about to do something that will:
Cut Amazon out of the AI race ENTIRELY…
Completely DESTROY Blue Origin…
And take control of the potential $25 TRILLION DOLLAR PER YEAR AI INDUSTRY
And in his wake, potentially create 1,806,000 NEW millionaires over the coming years…
Starting December 8th.
And this is your chance to be one of them.
Elon Musk is currently quietly planning the biggest project of his entire career.
And a single FCC filing proves it, click here to see why.
This is bigger than Tesla, SpaceX, and X combined.
And I believe it will not only cement Elon as the winner of the AI race…
It will allow Elon to control the entire industry.
Something of this magnitude has never happened in the history of the human race.
And it’s happening FAST.
According to my timeline, you must act by December 8th.
I explain everything right here.
>>>This is your free Millionaire Maker Masterclass… and it starts right now.
Sincerely,
James Altucher

U.S. Refiners Have the Most to Lose If Trump’s Ceasefire Holds
Trump’s weekend energy ceasefire announcement moved Brent before anyone read the fine print. Brent crude fell $1.54, or 1.47%, to $103.18 a barrel in early Monday trade, while WTI dropped 1.68% to $90.31. That initial reaction was real. What happened next is why this trade is not what it looks like on the surface.
Trump’s proposed energy ceasefire appears limited to oil refineries, with Moscow yet to agree and Russian attacks on Ukrainian power infrastructure continuing. A White House official told Axios the proposal covers only attacks on oil refineries. Ukraine said the first it heard of the move was Trump’s Truth Social post, and Russia struck Ukrainian energy infrastructure hours after the announcement. “Questions remain over the validity and longevity of any such ceasefire, and without clearer evidence that it will actually hold, the extent of the pullback is likely to stay limited,” KCM Trade chief analyst Tim Waterer said.
The Domestic Inflation Reading
Read this correctly and it is not a geopolitical story. Gas prices remain the highest they have ever been for this time of year. Even though the national average dropped 5 cents last week to $4.36, this is the first October in which the national average has remained above $4 per gallon. Diesel averaged $6.32 per gallon on October 6, up 71.7% from $3.68 a year earlier. Heading into the November 3 midterms, affordability is a top voter priority, and pump prices are expected to hold at elevated levels through Election Day.
That context is everything. Trump is not conducting energy diplomacy, he is conducting pre-election price management. The diesel supply agreement with Moscow that preceded Sunday’s ceasefire announcement was the tell. ICE gasoil and U.S. diesel futures fell after Trump said Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel to U.S. and global markets. The ceasefire framing gave that commercial deal political cover.
What This Does to the Refiner Trade
Here is where the options opportunity sharpens. U.S. refiners have been crushing the oil majors in 2026, with Valero, Marathon Petroleum, and Phillips 66 more than doubling as record fuel crack spreads boost refining margins. The real shortage has been refined products, not crude, with large volumes of Middle Eastern and Russian product flows disrupted. That structural gap is what drove these stocks to their current levels: Valero trades near $434, Marathon near $455, and Phillips 66 near $278.
A credible refinery ceasefire compresses the crack spread that built those gains. Damaged Russian plants cannot restart overnight, a halt to strikes would not immediately restore exportable fuel: damaged equipment still requires repair, plants need to restart, and additional production must become available for shipment. The truce is a headline risk, not yet a supply event. But options markets price expectation, not physical barrels. Even an unverified ceasefire that lingers in headlines can shift near-term implied volatility in these names heading into earnings, with Valero reporting October 22 and Phillips 66 reporting October 28.
The Fed Variable
Crude at $103 feeds directly into the December Fed decision. Market odds for a December move have been volatile, but the directional point stands: energy is one of the inputs that can keep inflation sticky and make a hike more plausible. Core PCE inflation has run above 3% every month of 2026, and major banks have still kept a December quarter-point raise on the table in their base cases. Oil prices could prove to be the deciding factor.
A sustained drop in energy prices from here, even 5 to 8 dollars on Brent, would soften the November CPI reading that lands ahead of the October 28 Fed meeting, and could shift the December calculus. That is the chain: a refinery ceasefire that markets half-believe, a diesel deal that lowers pump prices by even a few cents before November 3, and a CPI that gives Chair Warsh just enough cover to pause in December.
The Beast Verdict
The trade here is a put debit spread on Valero or Marathon Petroleum targeting Q3 earnings in late October and early November. Both stocks have run more than 100% in 2026 on a spread environment that a partial ceasefire directly threatens. A defined-risk structure limits exposure to the very real scenario where the ceasefire collapses and crack spreads hold. The thesis has three reinforcing legs: a catalyst with a clear political timeline (November 3), a Fed decision that energy prices will directly influence (December 9), and refiner stocks priced for continued disruption that a half-confirmed truce can dent on sentiment alone. Watch daily diesel crack spreads and any White House statement that broadens the refinery-only framing. Either development closes or opens this trade fast.
